The early history of the islands is dominated by the influence of the Vikings and from the 14th century on by the relationship with the Kingdom of Scotland, and then latterly as part of the United Kingdom. ==Prehistory== (詳細はmidden site at West Voe on the south coast of Mainland, dated to 4320–4030 BC, has provided the first evidence of Mesolithic human activity on Shetland.〔Melton, Nigel D.
